Hello, I am from central MO and looking to build a off road mower to use in the yard and back in the woods. I have been drag racing for years and now they are shutting the tracks down all I have is a drag car that will have to be used as a street car. So I though I would build a off road mower. Great site for building off grass mowers. Lots of good information on here to do it right.
I would like to know if anybody knows or if there is a site that tells the gear ratio for the rear ends. Or the final drive ratio? Thanks

I see where allot of the guys are changing there engine and trans pulley's to gain the speed. I was wanting to put on 26"-28"  rims and tires on to increase the speed and should help out going over the hills and going though mud. I am looking for a old mower now, then tear it down and start new. Then I can figure out the right pulley's and tire size. Has anyone did this? Thanks.

If you are going to build to ALTMA specs, you will be limited on tire size; it's in the build rules, which you should read to get an idea of what ATLMA is about.

Off road, these vehicles aren't really conducive to a lot of speed unless you are planning on some exotic suspension fabrication, in which case it would probably be easier to get an ATV.

The mowchine I'm building is a Murray widebody with a 20 HP Briggs. I have a 4.5 inch front pulley and a 6.5 inch rear pulley, through a six-speed Peerless transmission. I'm bogged down in disc brake fabrication right now before putting it back in running condition. I will be putting a golf cart front axle on it, running 18 x 8 inch tires on the front and 20 x 8 inch on the rear.

I would suggest you read as much as you can from the build threads on this site. It will give you a good idea what others have done and what is "doable." I learned a bunch from that process.

I am going to build some A-arms for the front and use a rack and pinion off of a golf cart. We don't have any kind of racing for off lawn mower around here, just building one for fun and use on my land. I am 54 so as far as speed and such, it does not matter to me. Just want a different atv to play with. If by some chance, I see there is more racing getting close to home, by all means I will go by the sanction body rules, always have. Never had any problems passing  Tech at any race in 40 years.

 smile  I'm almost 57, so it's great to see another old guy on here!  My machine will see similar use as what you're contemplating, but I'm trying to keep it simple and heavy duty. Good luck with your build!

"keep it simple and heavy duty" That is what I was looking at too. Make it safe and simple, heavy duty and it will stay together and will be safe to enjoy. Good luck with your build also....
