Hey Guys,  Here's wishing that your day goes well for you.

We have a newbie  "  Letsgorace 48 "  that  a "silencer exhaust"   was mentioned in his write-up.    I'm  very interested in making such a muffler.     I'm forever out in the National forest  and would like to be just as quiet as possible.    I  put out a trail camera in different locations to "see" just what type of animals are  "out here".

The day before yesterday  I had a deer  "blow and wheeze" at me while setting up my camera and yesterday while crossing a ditch - - - had a deer go airborne passing in front of me not more than 50 feet away.    [  Thinking about mounting a camera on the front of my  ATV  with a grip trigger. bigsmile ]

Waaaaaay  back in 1957  while in the army  I had a motorcycle  that  I put steel wool in the tail pipe.   That was great until it blew-out while  "pushing it '  [  70 +]    and it made so much instant  noise  I almost wreaked it going out of control.    bigsmile

So - - - - just how would a person  MAKE a real quiet  muffler.     My  ATV has plenty of power to spare  250cc  and 4 forward gears/ neutral and reverse  with manual clutch.     Would it do any damage to the engine - - backpressure ?  What else have  I missed ?

It would be great to  "tip-toe " through the forest.

Your in-put would be GREATLY appreciated..

            Have a good one - - - - - Norman

They actually make a silencer exhaust system.

Reduce the noise of your ATV with the Kolpin Stealth ATV Exhaust Muffler System. Works in conjunction with the original muffler and engineered with an innovative high-flow/low-restriction spark arresting muffler. The universal ATV muffler kit can be adapted to fit any ATV with a four stroke engine and reduce it's exhaust noise by up to 50%. Designed, patented, and manufactured by ATV users in Wyoming, the Stealth Exhaust is USDA approved and does not adversely effect the engine or significantly decrease performance. All mounting hardware and detailed instructions included.

Thank  you  - - -  Thank you so much,

That was so nice of you to give me that info.     It's very important to me that  I'm not in the forest while I'm there  bigsmile      Yesterday  I got pictures of a doe with her fawn right behind her.  This picture was taken at 2:34 pm.      How about that.   Critters move around in the forest in the daytime if not disturbed too much by people or noise.

      Being a poor man - - - - the info helps me design and make a quiet muffler - - - - -- - without the steel wool    bigsmile

      Thanks again - - - - have a good one - - - - - -Norman

That's cool. I think I'd make my own also, the price tag on that thing is a bit much!

      Hey  Chris - - -   Hows it going  ?

Always  wishing you and your girl well.       Hang in there - - -  Things have a way of working out.      I  spoke with a forest ranger about a week ago, - - -  and she told me that she had a mountain lion walk across her back yard  - - - not that many miles from me.     I've been putting out   canned fish as bait hoping to  - - - perhaps - - - - get a picture of it  on my trail camera.     I know  I  have bears  and  a lynx in my area but so far no pictures of them.     I've got many different types of critters  in my forest  so i guess I'm just too new at this  "trail camera" thing.

Whoops - - - - - -SORRY - - - -  I strayed perhaps too far off topics.        The  ATV  is running OK now  since  " WE "  got the  "bugs" worked out.     The  ATV  has given me back my legs so to speak so  I can venture out into the forest again.  A  quiet muffler would be such a good thing to have.      [ TO be there and not disturb the forest  or the critters - - - - -a world many people have never experienced  ]

Here  I  go again - - - - - carried away with  sharing my thoughts  of  MY world .    I  guess I'm so  happy with the ATV   that  it's  unreal to be in the forest again.        Looking forward to getting one of my  mowers set up to navigate the forest trails  - - - - but right now - - - I  think I  will enjoy the ATV for awhile  longer.

Always wishing  "YOU GUYS "   the best,                                Norman

you can buy tractor exhaust mufflers at tractor supply, why not buy one with an 1 5/8 inlet outlet, its close to 1" pipe OD, its already baffled, and NFS approved, and you can stuff the inlet side with stainless steel wood before welding it on. (I would use stainless steel wool, so it doesn't  rust out) I think mine cost like $20-30 an its about 17" long and the big part is about 3-4" diameter it would have to be a snorkel or side pipe but it would lower the tone due to the expansion chamber size, as well as would be cheap to play with. I got this Idea for my mower atv because alot of people use these mufflers on quads, they are not quieter than most quads though, they use them because they are free flowing.

or if you want to make make it, use 1" pipe, step up to 2.5", straight 2.5" pipe x 6" long, back down to 1" for an outlet or so, use a SS drain screen at both ends as wool baskets, and stuff it full of wool, because you can open it up, you can build the first one with plain old wool until you get the right size, then restuff with SS when it rusts out.

you could tack weld BIG washers in there to give you baffles, then put the SS wool in to redivert, theres lots of ways to do this, and its peaked my interest :-) my cart needs a muffler, but doesn't have room for the tractor one above being rear engined, my solution may be to make something like this out of an elbow and put it in front of my supertrapp

on thing we might need to look at as well, a baffled snorkel intake?

Hey Guys,   I  hope that your day goes well for you,

That quiet muffler is so interesting that  I've been doing some study about how "they" are made.    There are several ways to produce different sounds and sound levels.      One thing  that really caught my eye was the use of  "baffle chambers".   I found out that by adjusting the size of a  "baffle chamber" - - - it's possible to cancel out the  "harmonics" that produce the   "loud" offending noise level.    [ Whew - - - - bigsmile - - - - had to take a deep breath on that sentence   - - -  bigsmile   ]

I've decided to make my own muffler  - - and in such a manner that it may be opened up to examine  and adjust   the baffle chambers.  A sorta trial and error  setup .     I like that idea of using  SS  sink drains to hold the SS wool.      I do know for a fact that steel wool can bring the sound down to a whisper - - - - - if it don't get blown out. bigsmile    bigsmile

Today is a rainy day here so  it's a good day to be in my workshop.    [ one muffler in the making ]   bigsmile

      You  "Guys" take care  and have a good one - - - - - - Norman

upon considering this I may try packing my supertrapp with stainless steel/bronze wool, also looking at stainless scrubbies instead, the larger wires make it harder to blow out, and probably less effective, but easier to find.

I went on sams club and ordered a 12 pack of stainless steel scrubbers to be pulled, I'm going to use these instead of steel wool, the larger wire size should make it a little harder to blow out in my application, it won't be as quiet as proper steel wool probably, but it'll help. 12/1.75 oz for under $8, no shipping! I think I only need 3 of these, so I'll have extra to try and fab up a mini turbo muffler bigsmile I'll keep you all informed.
