I just picked up a mower with a peerless 600 transaxle in it and am wondering if there is anything i need to know before i throw a small pulley on it and go screaming down the trail.And is it better than a peerless800 which is what i got in my tractor at the moment

Dont throw a small pulley on it you will get no belt surface for the belt to grip. Change the old gear grease to oil.

600's already have oil in them, no need to scrape out old grease.   I'd change it tho...that way you know it's full of good oil.  Peerless calls for straight 90w.
As far as durability, the 600's are about bullet proof, although there are slow speed variants to watch out for.  Model 601-001, 002, 003 etc. are slow speed models that are heavily under driven.

well i dont know what model it is yet.I got it for free and havent got a chance to look at it.It came out of an ol yardman that had an 8h.p briggs.Perfect for a/p but i dont have the money to race uslmra.
