keep in mind these are OLD plans, but the idea is still quite valid.. this is NOT for garden tractors, this is a small implement tractor. so if you have some manual trans cars hiding on your farm, and some skills, this might be fun for you.

narrow a RWD car/truck axle, manual trans, lawn mower style clutch and super low gearing.. would be almost unbreakable and with a good set of snow/ag tires, a darn good ATLM recovery rig or small farm pulling/snow plowing rig. the one from mother earth is based on a VW rear end which is very compact. I would seriously look at changing it to a wide front end if you go there though..

I love home-made tractors.  Have 3 of them myself
Every one is different, and the amount of ingenuity that goes into them is amazing.

...for some reason I can't post pics hosted by photobucket, otherwise I would add some to this thread.

Just because you move up in a class doesn't mean that you'll "loose" the "race", it just means that you're building a better, more capable machine.

Thanks for fixin' it Chris.
Here's a couple pics... first one is a homemade machine that was rescued from the scrap yard.  Powered by a Wisconsin AHH engine, it has a Ford model A tranny, front and rear axles and steering box.   Assembled on 3" channel.
The second is a machine built by my wife's great uncle.   It is 4 wheel drive and rides on cut down rambler axles.  Powered by a Briggs opposed twin (not pictured) connected to a 3 speed top loader tranny.   It steers like a crawler, brakes on each side.
