has anyone mounted an engine over the transaxle are there any down sides to this because i think this is what I'm gonna do on my mower life the rear up enough and mount the engine over the transaxle...i figure it would put more weight over the back which is what I'm aiming for....then i would need a small clutch...your input/ideas are appreciated

well the more weight over the back axle the more traction but also it gets rid of alot od the driveline problems there would be less belts and everythign to mess up

that sounds good for a drag race but at some point and time you will have to turn and that aint happening with no weight up front seems to me the key to traction is keeping the r's up to clean the tread anyway the last thing you want to do with a mower with a max of 22" tires is try to find the bottom you need to stay on top http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/product_catalog/Product.jsp?store=Main&catId=108&leafCatId=10802 plenty of good tires on this site to give you some traction and also a tether switch (your other post

tires, wheels and hubs are last on my list...im gonna stick with my teather switch you know what they say if it aint broke dont fix it my other two havent failed yet...i mean whats to say i cant build one better than one i can buy...so i guess i keep the engine up front then that leads me to...what is the easiest way to power the transaxle when its lifted...jackshaft?

jackshaft or give the transaxle pully a lift kit and a bearing up top to support it

if you want the engine over the rear, get yourself a rear engine mower like Chris's Toro. as for lifting a transaxle, if you cant extend the input shaft up with a tube, and add a bearing at the top, it could give you more ground clearance than a jackshaft.

Yes you do want weight over the rear. But you dont want too much weight, can cause problems going up hills. The Toro's like Chris' and mine have lighterweight rear axle.

Having too much weight over the rear can be quite scary at times.
Like in snow/mud/anything slippery situations. No matter which way you think you're going to turn, in reality you're going straight.

Just because you move up in a class doesn't mean that you'll "loose" the "race", it just means that you're building a better, more capable machine.

I would definitely keep it up front. I have a rear engine crapsman and it does not turn on macadem sometimes. It stinks in snow.

On the rear engine riders, sometimes it helps to put a little weight in the front like a cinder block.

Well you make a mount that kinda tucks it away. I'm going to do it on my Toro because most of my woods is hills and I really dont like tipping a mower over my head, especially in a creek with rocks. On one of my MTDs I used a really heavy duty town chain that i bungeed around the front exhaust mounts.
