so last year i showed him how to drive a hydro this year i want to teach him how to shift but dont want him to have a clutch yet any ideas i was thinking centrifugal but they are spendy and its an 11 hp motor is there any other way or a cheap place to get a centrifugal

When you say clutch im guessing you mean a lawnmower clutch? For an ATLM a manual clutch is a lot better than a centrifigal. You can control the torque when you let off the clutch better.

i hear that but i cant put too muck on him at one time it will take the fun out of it and he will lose interest the centrifugal is temporary till he gets the shifting down so it would be like a learning aid

You don't have to shift the transmission though. The clutch is just as easy to operate as the lever on a hydro, just backwards. If he wants to go - let the clutch out, if he wants to stop - push it in. Just start him off playing in 1st gear or so, and by no time he should get the hang of it. I taught my ex-girlfriend's 5yr old son how to operate the clutch on the Toro when I first got it, and him and I would go cruising around the yard at like 2MPH... Although, a few times he got a little courageous and tried to play smash the Toro into the Wizard...

been real busy but ive got a few things done the first is after debating with kevin on his butterfly wheel i decided to do some research since my son really wants it to be like his power wheels four wheeler with handle bars my solution is a steering stablizer to limit how fast the bars can be turned problem is they are huge (basically a shock) then at work i was fitting the flow controls on an air cylnder (however you spell it ) and relized it would work sweet for an adjustable stabilizer http://www.flickr.com/photos/7345270@N05/474065082/after that went to my brother inlaws work and fabbed up some tubing to mount the steering and hood http://www.flickr.com/photos/7345270@N05/474065084/had to cut the cowl on the motor for the steering apparently an 11 is too big for a huffy by the way for all who dont know handlebars are not legal for atlm this mower has two lock collars to easily swap back to a steering wheel whenever needed or permanently if deemed unsafe

Just a note, you said you had to cut the shroud on the 11hp to make the steering fit, i have to do something like that with my huffy, since the 18hp opposed is not ment for it at all, but i wont be cutting anything, ill be benting a peice of steel around the carb in an arc so it will clean and still come out in the stock location.

Just a quick question abut your steering. Are you using the stock gear to gear setup? or did you run a straight bar? I know the gear to gear on mine was VERY strong and also made it somewhat easier to turn than havin just a straight bar.

Any updates? I'd like to see some better/bigger pictures of that thing so we can use it for our website. Some good on-trail, in-the-woods, covered in mud shots Also, try to use our image uploader and not flickr. Our image uploader is a billion times better than flickr and will make it easier to post pictures here on the forum and on the website. For info on it check out this thread: http://www.atlma.us/index.php?topic=219
