To correct the issue of the slotted rear hubs  you could use JB weld to fill in the slot after cleaning the area thoroughly.I have used JB weld on cracked IC blocks and it holds suprisingly well.I would use a triangle file to widen the base so that it would create a key within that slot so that it was bigger at the base than the open side.

The only problem with that is there's no bushings, bearings, or grease zurks on rear wheels. The truly mowtivated could easily alleviate that problem though!
