Just thought I'd give you all my idea and see what some of you think.
I'm going to use it for a work house around the house and maybe a recovery unit.

 1st Idea
I have the drive Assembly out of a golf course mower . It was powered but 2 hydraulic motors and a K-series motor and pump.
My thought was to take a standard mower and remove the front axle and replace it with a trans-axle. I'd power it with the 2 hydraulic motors, using #40 chain and sprockets to tie the front and rear together. then It'd be something like a mini skid-loader. I'd use a lock out spool so it won't move in neutral.

2nd Idea
Same basic idea. But make it track drive instead of "4X4"

Any thoughts on this

Track Drive Mower would be BAD ASS! If you can find the right size tracks, do it, that would be so crazy.

Was thinking the ones off the small Mini X track hoes or off an older Mangnatra dozer.I could get them used off E-bay Maybe???.
I also was thinking about the 4x4 with pivot steer then add tracks to that for really bad weather.

When i was checking ebay for tracks to make a snowbike (minibike with ski in the front and track in back), everything was very expensive. But its worth checking.

How could you add tracks to something with pivot steer? What i would do is make something like a bobcat, with z-turn hydrostatic transmissions, and tracks. I've been dreaming about that for a while myself, but i keep getting sidetracked with other projects.

I guess pivot steer was the wrong word to use. Yea mostly like a skid loader. The left and right side would have there own hydraulic motor and the front and rear tires would be connected by #40 chain.
To put tracks on I'd use a spring loaded boggy system in the middle of the front and rear tire to keep an even ground pressure, when going over obstacles.

For a rubber track setup I'd even thought about using heavy duty conveyor belt from TSC. Then take old recaps I find along the road and cut them up to make track pads.

I'm thinking the fastest I'd want my speed to be, would be some where around 3.5 - 5 Mph max. Going for ground power and traction. And Above all I want to be as low as I can be but also kinda wide.....some thing around 6" ground of ground clearance ( to a full body skid plate)  and between 36 to 42" wide.

I,m looking for the best chase for that and also one with a good wheel base.
Any thoughts on this?

A skid-steer mower is certainly a cool and original idea! If you could get some used snowmobile tracks, you could use those...

There are a lot of guys on ebay selling rubber tracks from other equipment for a fairly reasonable cost, but i would think that if you had one snowmobile track and figured out a way to cut it straight you could get both mower tracks out of one snow track.

I wish I had the equipment and skill to do something with tracks

http://cgi.ebay.com/craftsman-lawn-tractor-riding-mower-LT-4000_W0QQitemZ250494575479QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a52a3e377&_trksid=p4011.c0.m14

What if you took this rear end and placed in the front of a normal mower and reworked the steering? Run double pulleys off the motor????
Any one have an idea or has this been done?

Well if I win, I'm going to give it a shot bigsmile Was thinking tho...need to use a jackshat type set up.
One pulley on the motor and one on top of a jackshat, with the clutch between the motor and jackshaft. Then off the jack shaft run as double pulley and 2 belts (one to each rear)

Does that sound like it would work to any one else?

In theory that should work (if I'm picturing it correctly)

I love this site just wish it had more ppl on it.
Going to do my best to get that tractor, If I do I'm going do a build on here with it. Also Cris or anyone else what would be a good Chase for my "skid mow" build? Just looking for Ideas. I feel it needs to be kinda wide. I was also thinking it should be long wheel base but now I'm thinking it should be short, that way there is less stress on the chain between the axles??Thoughts?

Anything free would be a good start!

You probably want a short wheelbase if your going to do a skid-steer mower. Not so short that it's tipsy, but not too long that it has a hard time skidding the tires. If you go with tracks, then a longer wheelbase would be optimal.

Wheelbase & height also have to be considered when thinking about width. The taller and longer and higher it is, the wider you're going to want it to be for stability purposes.

Well I was going to start my build this week but after a roll over on my race mower looks like I'll be down for a few days. I'm going to at least get some Pic's of the power plant and hydraulic motors. That way you all might get some ideas going for me. So please bear with me if it takes a few days to get the show rolling.

By the way you know it really sucks to have a tire go flat ( like right now) in the middle of a corner at those crazy speeds. Figured it to be about 40 mph off the tach.

Nope not a good thing.

Well I'm back to gathering up parts for my build. I'm going to go with tracks and do a high track build. Looks like it will be about 48" wide. tracks will be about 48" long and about 10-12" wide. I'm going to try and keep it at or near factory height.
