I finally picked up a lawnmower frame, I guess this will be the best place to start and build around it. Its a new(but old) mtd style I think its called a yard machine.
(I took all the mower deck junk off)

Bored with my troy bilt.

I got a rear end on it and I got most of the front end welded up last night. I think it'll hold up for awhile.

Im not sure the name of the rear end but it came off a yard machine mtd. Can someone help me identify it?

That looks like a good foundation to work with.  Post a pic of the rear end.  You prob have the F-N-R that's i n most of the vari-drive MTDs.

Looks like a good start. Was it a freebie?

Just because you move up in a class doesn't mean that you'll "loose" the "race", it just means that you're building a better, more capable machine.

Alright, a little update. I got some more freebies today. I got a hydrostatic rear end, 3 rear tires w/ rims and 2 front tires w/ rims. Im going to do a little switching with the tires and rims til im satisfied. Ill get pics up when I get my frame on wheels.

The name on the rear end I got today is called "Spicer". No idea what that means or what it is. Anyone got info on it?

Finally got the tires and the steering linkage on. The front end is welded up so its solid.

Alright. I got the motor on, the seat on and the battery in. Its running fine. Considering the belts are dry rotted and cut up. I've been driving this thing around the yard for like 30 mins. This is what I wanted to get done, but I wouldn't consider it finished...

I was also wondering if I left the muffler off the motor will it mess anything up or give me problems in the long run?

A hydtostat isn't going to get you anything over stock speeds, if you try to overdrive it that thing will burn up faster than a barn full of hay. Although, they are very good as a divorced transaxle (like a transmission). Then you can do your gearing in the chain sprocket size (like ryf did with his cart).

As with the exhaust, your best bet would be to have a good muffler on there. You can run a straight pipe, but if it's too short you run the risk of damaging the valves. It's also slightly against the safety rules not to have one on there wink

Well I went with the MTD transaxle for the rear end on it. I have a hyrdo but I didn't use it.

Well how long should the pipe be? I have the stock muffler but the way its setup it sits right infront of the mower. If I left it on and took it out it would get smashed up and pulled off in no time.

Extend the exhaust! Route it under the mower outta the way. You could put something cool like a dirtbike exhaust that dumps outta the side or rear  bigsmile

I thought about turning the exhaust pipe upward, but wouldn't that blow the exhaust into my face?  question

That won't matter.  A little carbon monoxide never hurt anyone.  It looks cool, that's all that matters.

well yeah I have to admit it does look cool and it would be a saving grace if I happened to stall out in some water but I don't think I'm going to do it. Maybe if I had some fab work done to my pipe to keep it a little bit further away from the engine I would consider it. Anyways here's a picture of what it would look like.

Anyways I thought I might need some lights sometime in the future and that led me to the question "Where would I mount them?" and I thought up of building a "roll cage" hood thing. I don't know if anyone has made one yet. Any comments or ideas?
I was thinking of welding a few pieces of metal tubes and bending them around the engine and making them bolt on.

Like an exo cage on a truck? I think that would look cool

Why not make a bumper/brushgard/bullbar and mount the lights on that?
