Gday gents,
let me introduce myself, names Carl i live 15mins north of Perth Western Australia im 18 years young.
just came across this site when i was searching for somebody with the same mad ideas as I.
I have a bolens LTX14 Hydro i have been rebuilding for offroading.
I have a couple of questions regarding rules though.
I am building my mower so i can gain experience in the field of small engines and equipment for future career prospects and also for a bit of fun with my brother. Is it at all possible to not adhere to ALL the rules mainly bolting or welding the front axle and widening the track by an 2 inches as i wish to place 22" tyres instead of the 20"s on there now. Also because it is a hydro i cannot use an auto return throttle as that would not work... Mostly because i will be using the mower for a workhorse aswell as recreation. it wont be used in competion or group meets and i will have saftey items such as teather kill switches and the like.
Cheers from Oz guys,
Carl.

Welcome to the forum.
Check out the "All Class Mandatory Rules" in the rules PDF. Those are basically the "safety rules" that we go by.

Just because you move up in a class doesn't mean that you'll "loose" the "race", it just means that you're building a better, more capable machine.

but if im running a hydro a auto return throttle would not work..
also how much would you consider 'slop' in the steering?
in the case of the rancher by newbs you seem to accept that is is just a fun machine and it does not have all the mandatory stuff on it.

Newbs left off not starting his build because he didn't have the money at the time; we haven't heard from him in quite some time...
Why wouldn't a throttle return work on a hydro? The throttle return is just that, it returns the throttle to idle on the engine.
As for the slop, OEM mowers have about 1/4 of a turn of slop in them which isn't really good at any speed. I would think about 1" of slop would be the maximum amount for anything above 10mph - but 1" of slop on a handlebar system and 1" of slop on a steering wheel system is considerably different.

Looking at your model of mower of google, i would think that with a 22" tall tire vs a 20" tall tire, you would gain the 1" wider that we ask for.
How does the hydro setup on your mower work? is it a foot lever? or is it on the fender?
I dont see the slack in steering being an issue as you wont be reaching any over stock speeds with the hydro (assuming youre leaving the governor in tact)

thanks or the replys, i was not aware there was any other variation of hydro to mine. I have a foot pedal for forwards and backwards and the harder you push the faster you go. So with an auto return throttle it would not work unless i rigged a teather to me or something.
I have about a 1/16th of a turn of slack in my stock steering as it is, is that tight enough?
So very true money89 the tyres im looking at are 11" wide instead of stock 10"
Just took it offroad today at my block, was awsome fun, didnt get stuck at all, am very impressed, ill post up some pics of it in a little while.

With that type of hydro setup, you can still run an auto return throttle. We all run them.
I simply use a brake lever off of a bicycle mounted on the steering wheel. with running a stock steering setup, you have to run a very long cable so it doesnt bind up as you turn the wheel.

we dont run ours fast like the race guys. mine will be geared to run around 30mph in 3rd gear. this will give me the speed on open trails and the tire spin in mud but still give the ability to have a low gear (1st) to pull out climb.

sweet when i find a decent tranny ill swap her over and install the auto return and such. By the way, this mower will be changed into a monster mower unless i get my hands on a better frame for the job. Allready collecing parts such as hubs and tyres, picked up some 60% tread desert duelers in bulk rubbish!
