does anyone know a way (besides larger tires) to raise the front end of a r-r mower? test drove my build-in-progress and kept bottoming out in old 4 wheeler ruts. (didn't like pushing 6" of mud) FYI. my build is an old Snapper, front is stiffened stock(bars are welded solid, new bushings) and still running the 4/10x4" rims(yes, 8" are in the works), back end is running an "modified" MST-205 t-axle, and 18" turf savers (and yes 20" atv's are coming soon too) but the clearance still may need to be lifted. the easier the better. thanks in advance for the ideas

I have ground clearance issues in my Toro also, I actually had to put in a skidplate because I ripped my steering joints off a few times.
I'd have to see your pictures of your current setup to really give you any *good* advice
|

That looks good, you have way more clearance than I do. You definitely have to widen it though, it looks like it could be tipsy.
There's a few ways you can go about getting more lift AND widening it. The cheap and dangerous way would be to make your own spindles out of round stock. Your best bet though, would be to build your own axle out of something simple like a 2" x 3" (for example) rectangular steel tube, and make custom spindles for it. If you build it yourself, you can give it as much lift as you want.
Another option would be to build the axle , but put it in a *slight* upside-down V shape to give you better clearance.

the inside of the front tires run even with the inside of the back. the back is a standard transaxle (MST-206) runs about 20" inside tire to inside tire. running 4.80x8 on the front and 20x9x8 on the back.back already has about 1" frame lift (due to removal of snapper's vari-drive and re-working the frame for the MST) the front only has the taller tires. it sits about level now.

the back end is already about 4" wider than stock (the transaxle is wider than the snapper vari-drive was) the front end hasn't really been lifted (but thinking about usong a front engine front axle welded where the original spindles are, moving them down about 1-2") that would allow me to space it out to where the front wheels run even outside front to outside back (about 4-6" wider)

Does offset wheels count as widening it? I got looking and the new wheels are offset 1" each further out (still planning on widening it more) just wondering. Posted on: April 27, 2008, 09:08:08 PM
 this is the running idea for lift/widening the front end (front clip borrowed fm MOWchanic's build thread) possibly angle it down a little more or welding it under the front setup (thought about putting the steering arms at the top of the spindles also) what do you guys think? |
