hey i saw on ebay this guy sells 3/4 axle locking gears for $66 i was also wondering why if you lock it you can not drive the mower on the road anymore at a 30- 40mph speed.

Locking the rear diff gives you a full time positraction setup, which allows for better traction. Here at ATLMA, we dont focus on road speed, we focus on mower ability OFF ROAD.

yes i understand that i guess i forgot to mention that i saw on heymow they guy said he could not go on the road any more and i thought mabie someone here would know why will it blow the tranny if you do Locking the rear diff gives you a full time positraction setup, which allows for better traction. Locking the rear diff wont blow the tranny. The reason transmissions blow is due to the extreme speeds we turn them at to get racing speeds. A locked rear diff will not keep the mower from being able to ride on the road, It will handle almost like an ATV.

I had a live axle on my toro (same as a locked diff) and it made turning on pavement much harder. Made turning in loose dirt even harder than pavement. Made the ride much more stable, and it was able to go absolutely anywhere. I'd lock it and not look back. You have to just learn to balance you're weight correctly, and with a correct Ackerman steering setup, on pavement it'll unload your inner rear wheel on the corner making it turn easier. My main turning problem came not from the locked rear axle, but the big opposed 18 twin directly over the rear axle.
lock 'er and don't look back. I wouldn't pay to lock it though - if you got access to a welder just weld up a few teeth, that's what I did before I put a real axle on my toro - I just welded up the diff and it worked excellent.

Just because you move up in a class doesn't mean that you'll "loose" the "race", it just means that you're building a better, more capable machine.

yes but how fast did you take your mower at with it locked and the 18hp? I have a craftman that i am putting a 16 twin on it and a 930 rear. I want to lock it but also hit 30-35mph speeds to get down the back roads to my offroad sight. I had a live axle on my toro (same as a locked diff) and it made turning on pavement much harder. What do you have done to your mower? Does it meet specs?

going fast without better braking and handling would be foolish and minimum, riding on public roads is illegal in most areas, so also not realistic to expect lots of info on this.
that said, In my experience, My ATGC right now is topping out at 50mph, solid rear axle (using mower parts engine and trans) its a little longer, but the rear locked axle issue can cause a very dangerous plowing effect on hard pavement, especially at 20+ if you are on and off the throttle through a turn.
one of the trails I ride is a reclaimed road in a state forest. the 3/4" axle and gears are not designed for the kind of abuse the "dragging" of the inside tire through turns creates. I run a 1" solid axle, and a peerless 820 (also 1" outputs)

Larger craftsmans and MTDs have them. Theyre easy to spot, they have large garden tractor wheels and 1" axles.

Before this thread goes any further, I'd like a response to my question with pictures to verify.
If this mower goes 40MPH on the road I want to see some pictures of your upgrades.

That's not what you said in the very first post in this topic.
So you're running this mower on the road, and the only modification you've done is a smaller pulley on the rear? Have you happened to read the rules at all?
