ok, so we've all seen my ATGC's platic 2.5 gallon ATV gas tank, its ok, but I want something that fits a space behind the seat, the atv tank doesn't mount very well, and I want some volume(mostly cuz I like being able to ride all weekend on a tank), I was thinking something the size of a 5 gallon aquarium or near abouts, 14"long 8"wide by 12" deep gves me about 5.8 gallons, assuming 90% capacity, its about  5.25 gallons, now that puts me at 40+ lb's of fuel, so I'm thinking 1/8" steel for the tank, as this isn't a car, and it will be beaten to death if its to thin, what do you guys think?

Understandable to want more fuel and to fill the space. Only 2 real things that bother me. One being protection around the "tank" and another is the tank structure itself. If it was me, i would seriously pressure test it when i was done.

I plan to pressure test it @ 10 psi overnight, I tested other homemade fuel cells at higher pressures, but they were for alot more fuel and much more dangerous situations, they were also thicker. most gas tanks in cars are like 18-20 gauge, but thats got good suspension, and not as likely to see the bouncing (not direct) mine will.

I don't think the gas tank is really likely to be punctured, considering where its going.

the tank will be between the overhead bars, which is 8" inside the side protection bars by the seat. its about the safest place on the ride.

IMO 1/8" would be perfect. Maybe even reinforce it a little bit with some 1/4" flat stock on the large areas of metal for support.

Just because you move up in a class doesn't mean that you'll "loose" the "race", it just means that you're building a better, more capable machine.
