hi again mike you could start by sanding and cleaning the magneto and flywheel, then iusually put it as close as possible without it touching and see what happens

Does the engine have points? If so they may need to be cleaned and re-gapped (.018-.020) Or, if it does a newer coil will retro-fit and would be more reliable.

Let me try saying what I'm thinkin a different way. If the engine is old enough to have points, a newer style magneto from an engine of the same size block will retro-fit and then there will be no need to rely on points and condenser. I'm also assuming this is a Briggs we're talking about.

i tend to agree with AcreFarm, if the engine is old enough to have points, its much easier to slap on a newer style electronic coil on it then it is to pull the flywheel off all the time.
Mike, you said you cleaned the flywheel and the coil pickups, how well? Also, what did you set the coil gap (gap between the flywheel and coil) to? The only real part of the flywheel that needs to be clean is the manget, the rest can be rusty as long as it doesnt rub the coil pickups.

so your saying it i go out and buy a new coil it should work. well the engine anyways is a Briggs and its old and about taking the flywheel off its not going to happen cause i tried and i ripped the bolt right out and now the flywheel can pry up about a 1/8 of an inch. the coil that i have now is nice and clean, i cleaned with a fine grit sandpaper and then i did the same with the flywheel. so you guys are saying i should go out and just buy a new coil? will it need new wiring? and could the ignition switch be the problem?

you can disconnect the ignition to make use its not the problem. If you go out and buy a new electronic coil, the only wire you have to deal with is the kill wire. I do believe you may have broken something if you caan pry up on the flywheel 1/8th an inch. Thats not a good sign. Is there any possible way you can get pics for us? When you pry up on it, is the flywheel itself moving up on the shaft? or is the shaft and the flywheel moving up?

where do you live mike if your close to minnesota maybe we can make that eight turn into a ten that works otherwise for troubleshooting start with the black wire coming off the magneto disconnect it and try to start it this wire will eliminate all ignition problems like the safety switches if thats not the prob find a junk yard with a few mowers i usually tell them the mower is junk and i will give them scrap price for the part but offer a buck and you pull it if you cant get a mag for a buck theretry a school with a small engines class they usually have a pile of motors that have blown but have good parts and if all else fails think minnesota again i have everything you need ill give you a ten if you can find your way here or a way to get it there without me going throgh too much B.S.

Yeah, that flywheel issue sounds like it may be a problem.

Just because you move up in a class doesn't mean that you'll "loose" the "race", it just means that you're building a better, more capable machine.
